Main Lesson: Long Division, Long Multiplication and Multi-Digit Operations with Ms. Elsa

This past week we expanded our scope of mathematics and heard about how math is used to observe and understand the world around us. We heard how wonder and curiosity of the cosmic world led early mathematicians to observe the movement of celestial objects. We discussed how these observations over time gave us the ability to track time, seasons, and led to the development of navigational systems and various agricultural and scientific understandings. Together we discussed “What are secrets of the world that are revealed over time?”

It was incredible to hear the different responses the children offered to this question. The children took turns sharing their observations which included how trees start off as small seeds and overtime reveal what sort of tree they become, how teeth below the gum lines are unknown to us until we are older, and how the age of a tree is also disclosed within the trunk!

After we drew connections between the use of mathematics in understanding the natural world we were invited to explore the Heart Springs garden for our Nature study. The children took turns sharing their thoughtful observations and the details they discovered from the various plants in the garden.

In our continued work with numbers we reviewed our times tables through the obstacle course and continued our work in reviewing long division and vertical addition and subtraction into the hundred thousands place. The last couple of weeks we have been doing assessment of skills in the various processes. This week we will finalize assessments while looking at conversions, factoring numbers and long multiplication. In our writing practice, the children each contributed a sentence to a story we made together as a class and read out loud. This class has quite the sense of humor and our shared story ended our week together in laughter and with the joy found in creative writing.

It was truly a fun and inspired week!
