First Week in 2nd Grade
Main Lesson: Form Drawing -  Foundations for Writing with Ms. Meaghan

September 15-17, 2026

In reviewing our week last week, I am reminded of just how beautiful and precious these first few days of the program can be. On the first day of the program, after our welcoming ceremony the children had recess and games. There was joy across the program ages with the children playing in different groups and moving about similar to planets orbiting from one area to the next; discovering all of the possibilities for them outside and with their peers. We then went into our classroom for our first main lesson where the children found their very own desk and chair. This is where they will sit during their lessons each day when we are in the classroom. 

Our lessons last week and for the remainder of this month and into October will continue to lay the foundation for handwriting, literacy and numeracy that the children learned last year in class. By exploring perhaps the most archetypal of lessons in straight and curved lines, the children begin to see the world a little bit differently. It was a joy to discover straight and curved lines in our classroom, on our bodies, in the garden and outside in the natural world. Each child was excited to see,  look and discern that there are indeed straight and curved lines all around us! As we continue with straight and curved lines we will begin working with form drawing which is a common practice for supporting eye tracking, spatial awareness (up, down, left and right), hand-eye coordination, strengthening the midline crossing and it builds confidence with writing on a page. The 2nd Graders will be doing more advanced forms as they are now stepping into their next year of learning at the program. 

By Thursday, each child was able to draw in their new main lesson book with beeswax crayons that they received in a crayon roll made of cotton fabric. Each desk has a drawer where the children can store their main lesson work and items. 

At recess and in our Team Course Challenge on Thursday, the 2nd graders are integrating beautifully and with enthusiasm. 

I am looking forward to next week and taking our learning further with our core story about Scout and June and the Magic Mountain.
