Main Lesson: Fiber Arts and Community Project with Ms. Sonja

October 12-15, 2026

In our final week of main lesson, The Science and Art of Indigo Dyeing, we were able to complete the majority of our quilt squares, and many of your student’s personal projects are well under way. We will carry this work forward in our handwork classes for the rest of the term. On Thursday, we took some time to clean and prepare the space for Mr. Cohen’s main lesson block, and ended the day in celebration of all our good work! As we gathered around the table to enjoy cookies and hot chocolate, I asked the students to reflect on aspects of the main lesson that they enjoyed, as well as aspects that they found challenging. Several of them spoke about seeing their work emerge from the dye baths, and seeing the color transform from a murky green, to a deep indigo, and discovering what they’re folding, typing, and stitching produced. I have been working with indigo and other natural dyes for many years, and this part of the dyeing process never ceases to inspire wonder and joy. I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to work with this group, and I look forward to continuing our work together though the year.

In gratitude,

Sonja
