Main Lesson: Fiber Arts and Community Project with Ms. Sonja
September 15-17, 2026Dear Middle School Families,
As we enter into the last week of this main lesson block, I have been reflecting on my time with your children. This group has really blown me away with their capacity to dive deeply and engage in the subject at hand. They are thoughtful, collaborative, curious, and incredibly creative. It has been a privilege and a joy to work with them in such a concentrated way, and I look forward to continuing our work together in handwork thought the year.
Last week we folded and dyed several squares for our quilt project. Our plan is to dye, construct, and finish a queen size quilt, which is quite an undertaking! Once we have our quilt top constructed, I will be reaching out to the community to help with the quilting process. If you have any interest in supporting this work, please reach out of to let me know. Beginners are welcome, as I can teach you along the way.
This week, we will aim to finish all our our quilt squares (there are more than 100 of them!), complete main lesson pages, and work on personal projects. After this week, most of our dying for this project will be complete and we will continue to work on it during our handwork classes though the rest of the term.
If they haven’t already, please help you child turn in their project proposal and have them wear clothing that can get messy, or send something to cover their clothes.
If any questions arise, or you need to get in touch, please email me at sonjaphoenix@protonmail.com or text/call 503-484-6605
Warmly,
Sonja
